Aldi To Open 80 New UK Stores In 2016

Aldi has revealed to British newspaper the Mail On Sunday that it will open 80 new branches in the UK this year, 23 per cent more than last year and its fastest ever rate of growth in the country.

The plan would bring the number of Aldi stores in the UK to over 700, and according to the newspaper, debunks the suggestion that the pace of the discounter’s growth may slow in Britain.

Speaking to the Mail On Sunday, joint managing director of buying at Aldi UK, Jonathan Neale commented, “This has been another excellent year for Aldi. We’re seeing a permanent, structural change in the shopping habits of UK consumers.”

“They now know they can get all the products they want at significantly cheaper prices than at other supermarkets.”

The news comes just over two months after rival German discount supermarket Lidl unveiled its plans to accelerate its growth in the UK.
