Ardagh Produces The World's Lightest Aluminium Seafood Can

Glass and metal packaging company Ardagh Group has developed what it says is the 'world's lightest aluminium seafood can' in its specialist aluminium can plant in Cuxhaven, north Germany.

The shaped seafood can, referred to in the industry as a 'dingily', has been designed with a conical wall thickness of 0.170 mm, with the next in line being 0.215mm.

The development was pioneered by technicians at the Cuxhaven plant and by Ardagh's R&D Centre in Crosmieres, France, which came together to establish the most suitable shape and size of the can with the same stability as other cans on the market.

Working closely with Larsen Danish Seafood, the first customer in Germany to use the new lightweight can, both parties overcame the challenge of securing optimised seaming on a lightweight can with a much thinner body and Easy Open ring pull lid.

Patrick Savour, commercial director, Seafood at Ardagh Group's metal division commented: "Our innovative ultra-thin seafood can is a continuation of the pioneering work that we carry out to achieve higher standards of performance with reduced material input and weight."

The lightweight can is now available in 100g or 115g versions.
