Carrefour Opens Its Biggest Asian Hypermarket In Beijing

Carrefour has opened its biggest hypermarket in Asia to date, which represents an attempt to capitalise on the strengthening demand among affluent Chinese shoppers for premium and imported goods, beijing.china.org.cn reports.

The Anglophone edition of Chinese news source This Is Beijing notes that of the 40,000 products stocked by the new hypermarket located in China’s capital, some 6,000 are imported. Among these are luxury items such as Australian meat and French salt.

Speaking about the 71,380-square-metre facility, which is very well served by the city’s buses, and possesses a large carpark, Carrefour’s regional manager for North-West China, Laurent Olszewski, said, "We are focusing on imported food products as there has been a sea change in the food preferences of Chinese consumers. It is quite different from what I saw when I first came to China in 1995.

“Chinese consumers want to try everything."
