Iberian Food Distribution Market Grows 2.3% In 2016

The Iberian food distribution market should end 2016 with a turnover of €102.3 billion, growing by 2.3% from last year.

According to the DBK Informa study, the food distribution sector in Spain and Portugal (which includes hypermarkets, supermarkets, self-service and cash & carry) was worth €100 billion in 2015 (+1.8% on 2014). Spain accounted for €85.5 billion (+1.9%) or 85.5% of the total, while the Portuguese market was worth €14.5 billion (+1%).

Due to the increasing number of visits to establishments and the growing importance of fresh products, the turnover of supermarkets and neighbourhood stores grew 2.4% in 2015 to €77.3 billion. Consequently, hypermarkets saw a 0.6% drop in turnover to €14.4 billion.

Driven by rising tourist demand and growth in the hospitality industry, cash & carry stores grew 1.5% year-on-year, with revenues of €5.3 billion.

For 2016, the study forecasts increased turnover (+3.5%) for cash & carry stores, while supermarkets and self-service outlets will continue to see above-market growth.

The main retailers tend to increase the number of product references and to introduce new formats and varieties. Branded products will see a moderate decline in market share, in favour of a greater diversity of products from various manufacturers, as well as improvements in the supply of fresh produce and ready meals and the expansion of the local product portfolio.
