3.35 Trillion Packaged Goods Produced in 2015: Euromonitor

There was a global increase in demand for packaging in 2015, increasing 2.2 per cent, compared to the previous year, for a total of 3.35 trillion packs. This is according to data recently published by Euromonitor, in its 2016 Packaging report.

Food remains the largest industry for packaging. In 2015, food packaging was largely shaped by an ongoing snacking trend, in which a number of packaging manufacturers innovated to make snacking more appealing to consumers.

Karine Dussimon, senior research analyst for the packaging industry at Euromonitor International, explained how innovation was key to producing appealing packaging in sectors that have been hit with negative press. "On the back of a 'war on sugar' in Europe and the Americas, consumers increasingly worry about calorie intake. Packaging innovation serves to meet demand for greater portion control — that's through packaging being more portable or smaller [in] size," said Dussimon.

"We saw many new introductions [that re-emphasised] the ability of packaging to help brands provide customers with what they want."
