Coop Unveils Future Food District For Expo Milano 2015

In the future, how will we purchase, what will we eat, and who will manage food production up to the point when it reaches our tables? These are just some of the questions that will be answered at Expo Milano 2015, within the Future Food Pavilion.

Encompassing some 6,500 square metres, it's a space that’s been created by a collaboration between Coop Italia, MIT SENSEable City Lab and Carlo Ratti Associati.

The Future Food District has been designed to represent one of the possible future scenarios of retail. It is a multipurpose facility that offers a prototype of how future shopping will look, placing innovation and cooperation side-by-side. The layout is split into five areas dedicated to different food chains.

"The original project dated back to 2013 and was entitled GeoCoop. It is based on the real experience of a group of young employees who highlighted the core values of Coop such as transparency and authenticity, which are essential in making conscious buying decisions" says Marco Pedroni, president of Coop Italia.

"What you will visit will therefore not be a high-tech pavilion where technology is an end in itself; At Coop, we prefer to take a different route, where technology is something that should be useful."

The Expo Milano 2015 exhibition site will also have areas reserved for local producers, who will be able to use the supermarket as a free trade area. Some ninety suppliers, from multinationals to small-scale producers, have shared Coop Italia’s original mission, which is to reveal a product’s origins, and which is currently applied to around 1,400 of its brand-name articles.

Expo Milano 2015 will open its doors on Friday, May 1.
