Majority of Portuguese Will Not Buy Fresh Grocery Products Online, Nielsen Study Finds

Some 59% of Portuguese consumers prefer to buy fresh produce and groceries in physical stores, rather than online, a Nielsen study has found.

On the other hand, just under a quarter (23%) admit they do not currently buy these products through the online channel but may be prepared to do so in the near future.

The Global Connected Commerce study from the Nielsen revealed that 61% of Portuguese consumers say they 'trust' online shopping channels, saying they feel secure in making personal information available on these platforms.

The key factors, according to the study, that could bring more Portuguese consumers to use food retailers' digital channels are return guarantees, free deliveries, product descriptions and information on the status of the order.

With regard to in-store food purchases, 41% of respondents admit to using self-service tills as a way to save time.
