U2 and Conad Cheapest for Private Label in Italy, Study Finds

U2 and Conad are the cheapest food retailers in Italy for private label products, according to a survey by consumers association Altroconsumo.

Esselunga and Ipersimply are deemed the most convenient for the purchase of both branded and cheaper products, while Eurospin is seen as the cheapest discount store.

One of the conclusions of the survey is that Italian consumers could save over €3,000 per year by doing their shopping exclusively in discount stores.

The ‘cheapest’ city, according to the study, is Pordenone, where it is possible to save over €1,000/year on the average grocery shopping basket. On the other hand, Genoa and Aosta are among the most expensive places to shop.

The survey analysed the prices of 115 product categories at 922 retail outlets (supermarkets, hypermarkets and hard discounts) in 67 Italian cities.
