Italy's Dairy Giant Granarolo Looks To Expand

Italian dairy company Granarolo Group is expanding its portfolio, acquiring part of cheese company San Lucio and entering into the bakery industry by taking over Pandea Dietetica.

The Parma-based baked good company,  specialising in products with and without gluten, had a 2015 turnover of €12.9 million, of which 66% came from sales of conventional products (such as crackers and bread sticks) and the remaining 34% from gluten-free ones (rusks, crackers).

Separately, Granarolo acquired 30% of San Lucio, a company which owns Groksi baked cheese, a lactose-free and gluten-free snack. The product is created by a patented method, allowing for the extraction of the moisture in the cheese, giving it crispness without the need for refrigeration. The Brescia-based company should end 2016 with a turnover of over €4 million in 2016, of which exports account for about 40%.

Granarolo Group has been seeking growth through acquisitions and by diversifying its activities for more than a decade.

Over the past 13 years, Granarolo Group completed 13 acquisitions in Italy and abroad, making it the third largest player in the Italian food industry, behind Barilla and Ferrero.
