Maxima Group Unveils 'Electronic Nose' To Track Freshness

Lithuania's Maxima Group has launched what it calls an 'electronic nose' - a mobile tool that enables shoppers to make sure of the freshness and quality of food with a short shelf life.

The technology was developed by the retailer in association with Ars Lab to 'better meet customer needs and effectively ensure the quality of products', the company said in a statement.

"Earlier this year, we opened our own research laboratory, and now we have made another step – introducing customers to a mobile tool that will allow them to make sure of freshness and quality of products with short shelf life," said the general manager of Maxima LT, Žydrūnas Valkeris.

"At the same time it is a way of self-control for ourselves, which will allow us to achieve maximum quality."

The 'electronic nose' has been installed in a store in Vilnius, in the fresh meat, poultry and fish departments, on a trial basis.
