Mercadona To Open First Store In Spain's Gipuzkoa Region

Spanish supermarket Mercadona is set to open its first store in Gipuzkoa in northern Spain on 27 May, in a move that will create 40 jobs for the region.

According to NoticiasDeGipuzkoa.com, the store will be located in Irun, and is one of three that Mercadona has planned for the region, with the other two to be located in Eibar and Oiartzun.

The new store openings are part of the company’s expansion strategy, which is based on offering quality products at a lower price.

Alongside the brand’s typical grocery offer, the new store in Irun will feature fresh produce, bakery and fish from the region.

Mercadona has signed agreements with local suppliers to help boost business for the region’s farmers, and has also made deals with dairy group Urnieta Iparlat and the dehydrated food brand, Lezo Interal to supply the store.
