New 'Biostopper' Bottle Cap Guarantees Quality of Soft Drinks

Italian biologist Cristian Fioriglio has introduced a new device called a 'biostopper', a bottle cap whose colour shows whether the water or soft drink in the PET bottle represents a health risk for consumers.

If the bottle cap is clear, the bottle can be opened and its contents consumed. If it changes colour, it should not be consumed.

Fioriglio, from Catania, Sicily, has filed a patent for the product with the Ministry of Economic Development.

The acrylic 'biostopper' uses an iridescent paint that, at a temperature it considers dangerous (starting from 76.3°C) allows for Quality Control to verify that all the proper storage conditions were maintained throughout the supply chain.

According to Fioriglio, his invention seeks to prevent the ingestion of pollutants from products in PET packaging.
