Portugal saw a 0.6-per-cent increase in sales of non-alcoholic beverages in 2014 over the previous year to €820 million, according to a study published by Informa D & B.
This result represents a moderate recovery after three consecutive negative years.
Total consumption was also up by 2 per cent, compared to 2013, to 2.010 million litres.
Bottled water had the largest share, with 1.155 million litres sold, about 58 per cent of the total. Soft drinks are in second place, with 750 million litres consumed, followed by fruit juices, with a sales volume of around 100 million litres.
The non-alcoholic beverage market in Portugal consists of 58 companies, and 90 per cent of employment volume is concentrated in only ten of them.
With regard to exports, the sector has been showing remarkable growth. In 2014, overseas sales reached €200 million, compared with €118 million in 2010. Spain was the main destination of these exports, with 40 per cent of the total, followed by Angola, with 30 per cent.
