Portugal’s Sogrape Scoops Major Wine Accolade

Portuguese wine company Sogrape Vinhos has been elected the best wine producer in the in 2015 by the World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wines and Spirits (WAWWJ).

Every year the association chooses the 100 best wine producers in the world based on strict assessment criteria, such as the number of international prizes they have won over the year.

After reaching fourth place in 2014, this year Sogrape Vinhos takes first place, ahead of US company Ernest and Julio Gallo Family and French firm Vranken Pommery Monopole Heidsieck.

Sogrape’s participation in 10 of 75 evaluated contests resulted in 131 awards, totalling more than 3,000 points calculated according to the importance of the medals in question and thus giving it the top position in the yearly ranking.

The firm has brands such as Mateus Rosé, Gazela, Sandeman and Casa Ferreirinha, but Sogrape Vinhos also produces wines in Argentina, Chile, Spain and New Zealand, and exports to over 120 markets.
