Spanish Consumers Spend Ten Times Less On Wholemeal Cereals

According to figures from the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN), what the average family spends on wholemeal cereals is not even a tenth of what refined cereals reach.

As reported by RevistaInfoRetail.com, nutrition expert Dr Francisco Botella explains, “The consumption of these types of products in Spain continues to be rare, especially because, culturally, they're linked to the worst organoleptic characteristics [appearance, colour, texture and taste] and because of their higher price, which is an added obstacle for the consumer.”

SEEN points out that the daily consumption of 45g of whole grains is proven to reduce the risk of developing diabetes type 2 by 20 per cent and colon cancer by 18 per cent.

Spanish consumers also have shown a high level of confusion regarding terms such as wholemeal, light, bio, eco-friendly and gluten-free.
