Spanish Olive-Oil Producers Chasing Retailers That Sell It As Loss-Leader

Carrefour Spain has been fined €42,120 by the Board of Extremadura for selling olive oil as a loss-leader.

As reported by ElDiario.es, the verdict was announced last Friday by the Union of Small Farmers of Spain (UPA).

This fine comes days after the Community of Madrid and the Region of Murcia imposed sanctions to El Corte Inglés for the same reason.

The UPA based its claim on a market study that demonstrated that olive oil can't be sold under €2.20 without selling at a loss.

Carrefour's fine is the first to surpass the €3,000 mark, as the Board of Extremadura has taken into consideration the company's economic solvency and intentionality of the campaign.

Lorenzo Ramos, the UPA's general secretary, said that the organisation "won't stop until it ends with this fraudulent practice, which hurts us so much".
