Walmart Invests Heavily In Wind Power

Walmart’s efforts to use only 100-per-cent renewable power has taken a significant step forward, following an agreement that will see the retailer buy wind energy from Pattern Energy Group’s new Texas wind facility, in a move which covers about a fifth of the company’s US energy requirements, fortune.com reports.

On a global basis, the multinational intends to derive seven billion kilowatt-hours through carbon-neutral methods by 2020. In signing the deal with the Pattern Energy Group, it has committed to purchasing 58 per cent of the wind energy produced at its plant, Logan’s Gap Wind.

Walmart says that by the end of the year, it will have removed 20 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gas from its supply chain. Furthermore, the energy savings brought by its wind power investment amount to the carbon footprint produced by 64,000 cars in a year.
