Coca-Cola Acquires Topo Chico Sparkling Water

Coca-Cola North America has announced the acquisition of premium sparkling mineral water brand, Topo Chico.

The product will be added to Coca-Cola's Venturing & Emerging Brands (VEB) unit, which will deliver the popular Mexican brand to more consumers across the USA.

Topo Chico has been produced and bottled in Cerro del Topo Chico in Northern México since 1985, and will continue to be imported from that source.

Coca-Cola already boasts many connections with the brand. The first Coca-Cola bottle in Mexico was packaged at a Topo Chico factory in the 1920s, while Arca Continental, Coke’s second-largest bottling partner in Latin America, has distributed the sparkling water brand for the last 30 years.

Expansion Plans

"Topo Chico is a fast-growing brand with a lot of passion behind it and growth runway ahead," said Matt Hughes, VEB's vice-president of emerging brands.

"The premium, imported sparkling water category is growing double-digits, and Topo Chico has proven itself in a significant market – Texas – where it’s leading the category."

Topo Chico is currently sold in Northern Mexico and in 35 states across the US, where 70% of its sales come from the state of Texas.
