Top Companies Listed On Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Some of the top retail and FMCG companies, including Metro, Coca-Cola European Partners and Campbell Soup Company, have been listed on the latest Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

The DJSI evaluates the sustainability performance of the largest companies listed on the Dow Jones stock market index, based on an analysis of economic, environmental and social performance.

Companies are only listed in the annual ranking if they are best in class within their industry for sustainability.

In this year’s rankings, German retail group Metro was named industry leader in the Food & Staples retailing sector for the third year in a row. Only five out of 43 assessed food retailers qualified for the DJSI.

"This rating is a confirmation of our comprehensive efforts in sustainability and it further strengthens our ambition at the new Metro to be among the most sustainable food traders worldwide,” said Heiko Hutmacher, responsible for sustainability at Metro AG's management board.

Dutch retail group Ahold Dehlaize also featured on the World Index.

FMCG Brands

In terms of FMCG companies, Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) made both the European and World index lists for the second year running.

“This is a fantastic achievement for our new company as we work towards sustainable growth,” said Damian Gammell, CEO of CCEP.

“Our listing on the DJSI confirms that we are heading in the right direction. There is much more to do, and that’s why we’re working with The Coca-Cola Company to develop a sustainability strategy for Western Europe that demonstrates how we will meaningfully address some of the biggest issues facing society.”

Meanwhile, the Campbell Soup Company was listed on the North America Index for the ninth consecutive year, and the World Index for the eighth year.

Dave Stangis, Campbell’s vice president for corporate responsibility and chief sustainability officer, said that the company is “honoured” to be included on the index again.

“Strategic sustainability unlocks value in Campbell’s business objectives and is aligned with our purpose across all areas of our company,” he said. “Integrating sustainability into our operations is good for the planet, our consumers and our business.”
