Continente Looks To Reduce Plastic From Seafood Section

Portugal’s Continente has launched bags that contain 40% less plastic to the seafood section of its stores.

The so-called 'Sea Wrap' is made of 100% recyclable paper, coated inside with a thin layer of polyethylene, which prevents the spillage of liquids and guarantees the conservation of the product.

The Sonae-owned retailer says that the new bags will reduce its plastic usage by 70 tonnes per year.

After removing the fish from the bag, customers are invited to separate the two materials, in order to facilitate easy recycling.

Packaging Commitment

Continente has made a commitment to bring forward to 2025, the ambition set by the EU for 2030, to reduce (or even eliminate where possible) the use of raw plastic materials for product packaging.

Last year, Continente launched an online platform dedicated to the theme of plastic, which highlighted the retailer's commitment and initiatives, as well as offering consumer tips for the better use of this material.
