EDEKA Seeks To Promote 'Conscious Nutrition' Among Children

EDEKA has announced plans to promote healthy eating among children, as part of its efforts to improve the dietary habits of German consumers.

Through the Hamburg-based EDEKA Foundation, the group has developed the 'Gemüsebeete für Kids' (Vegetable Bed For Kids) initiative, which brings subjects such as nutritional awareness closer to pre-school children.

Over the coming weeks, around 2,400 vegetable beds will be planted in kindergartens across Germany.

This means that the Gemüsebeete für Kids initiative will now be able to reach more than 190,000 children.

Sowing Vegetables

As part of the initiative, children from participating kindergarten and daycare centres sow their own vegetables in beds that were donated by the Foundation.

Thereby, they learn playfully how much attention the seedlings need until they finally can be harvested and processed into food.

Some 2,400 planting campaigns will take place across Germany by the end of June.

"For us, it is important to create an awareness of a well-balanced diet at an early stage", explains EDEKA Foundation board member Markus Mosa. "That's why we bring children closer to food and its preparation in an experience-oriented way."

A questionnaire carried out by Edeka found out that 98% of childcare facilities are 'completely satisfied' with Edeka's commitment.
