As part of its commitment to make all packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, Ferrero has announced a new packaging format for its Kinder Joy product, as well as exploring chemical recycling solutions and partnerships to develop common eco-design guidelines for packaging.
Ferrero announced a new recyclable paper spoon for its Kinder Joy product, which is made from high-quality virgin paper, is sourced from a sustainable, certified supply chain, and uses ultra-sonic sealing technology to seal the spoon in the plastic film.
The new Kinder Joy spoon will be released in EU countries by early 2021, and globally by 2022.
The new spoon will result in an estimated 45% reduction in the product’s carbon footprint, with a projected reduction of over 1,500 tonnes of plastic per year.
Ferrero has also revealed that it is exploring opportunities to develop chemical recycling in partnership with the Reciplast project and its suppliers.
Chemical recycling aims to recycle complex structures used in plastic packaging when mechanical recycling cannot be used.
The company is also partnering with multiple stakeholders, including CEFLEX and RecyClass, to develop common eco-design guidelines that would be uniform across the industry.
CEFLEX is a collaboration of EU companies and associations representing the entire flexible packaging value chain.
The partnership between Ferrero, CEFLEX and RecyClass will focus on developing design guidelines for both flexible packaging and the infrastructures to collect, sort and recycle it, the company said.
RecyClass is an initiative promoted by Plastics Recyclers Europe, designed to help the plastics value chain improve its recycling of packaging products.
RecyClass will also provide a recyclability assessment tool, which can be used to identify potential issues and areas of improvement for the end-of-life of packaging.
