Germany's DUH Launches 'Award' To Highlight Unnecessary Plastic Packaging

Environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has announced the launch of an 'award', the 'Goldener Geier' (Golden Vulture), to highlight wasteful use of plastic packaging in the consumer goods sector.

Packaging Madness

The DUH is calling on people to submit photos of nonsensical plastic packaging under the hashtag #Verpackungswahnsinn (#packagingmadness) via social media.

In mid-July, the DUH will select the most frequently-mentioned packaging from the submitted nominations and put it to a final public vote.

The 'winner' of this vote will receive the 'Golden Geier' and the company in question will be called upon to address its use of wasteful packaging.

With this measure, the DUH wants to increase the pressure on trade, manufacturers and politicians to end the use of avoidable packaging.

"No country in Europe causes as much packaging waste per person per year as Germany does," commented Barbara Metz, the Deputy DUH managing director. "Manufacturers and retailers are responsible for our environment and must encourage the avoidance of waste as well as the reuse and recyclability of packaging. The more consumers take part in our campaign, the more we can achieve together."

Supporting Role

This project is supported by the actors and environmental activists Hannes Jaenicke and Lucas Reiber.

"Climate strikes, and, more recently, the European elections, have made it clear that people in Germany want a rethink. That's why I support the action of the DUH," Reiber explained.
