Nestlé Portugal Switches To 90% Recyclable Or Reusable Packaging

Nestlé Portugal has announced that over 90% of its packaging materials can be recycled or reused.

This achievement is part of the Swiss company's global commitment to make 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

Nestlé's factories in Porto and Avanca in Portugal have served as important hubs of innovation, led by the 'Sustainable by Design' concept to achieve this target.

The food giant teamed up with businesses to review product development in nutrition, flavour, texture, sustainability and packaging quality.

Paper Packaging

In 2019, Nestlé Portugal launched its first products featuring 100% paper packaging with the Nesquik All Natural range and the YES snacks!

It also introduced the new Naturnes Bio Nutripuffs organic snacks for babies under the 'Sustainable by Design' concept.

Nestlé Portugal's well-known brands have been investing in recyclability, with Nestum moving to 100% recyclable packaging.

Elsewhere, breakfast cereals brands Nesquik, Chocapic and Estrelitas are already entirely recyclable.

At the end of 2020, the company's Porto plant produced the first 100% recyclable packaging for its Buondi Prestige roasted coffee, targeting the professional segment.

Sustainable Packaging

The packaging, produced in Portugal from a 100% recyclable plastic material, will eliminate 2.2 square kilometres of aluminium per year and reduce water and energy consumption during the production process.

The recycling process for packaging developed by Nestlé Portugal will also benefit production in other countries where it was not possible to do so earlier.

Since the beginning of 2020, Nestlé Portugal, which is also a founding member of the Portuguese Pact for Plastics, has reduced the use of virgin plastic by 2.5 tonnes.
