Spar Croatia Reduces Sugar Content In Private-Label Products

Spar Croatia has announced that it has modified the recipes of around 65 own-brand products to reduce their sugar content.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the daily intake of sugar should equate to no more than 25 grams, or six teaspoons, per person.

In 2017, Spar launched an initiative to cut sugar content in its own-brand products as per WHO's recommendation.

It will help the retailer to remove 21 tonnes of sugar from its own-brand products by the end of this year.

'A Positive Trend'

Helmut Fenzl, chief executive of Spar Croatia, said, "We [...] want to initiate a positive trend in reducing sugar in food products and invite food producers to join our initiative to reduce the negative impacts of excessive sugar."

In 2018, Spar reformulated the recipes of 36 own-brand products to reduce their sugar content.

The new recipes offer the same taste without using artificial sugar substitutes, the retailer said.
