Stora Enso Introduces Microwave-Safe Sustainable RFID Tags

Stora Enso has introduced eco-friendly, microwave-safe RFID tags for food and beverage items as part of its new ECO RFID Food & Beverage Collection.

The company claims that the ECO Meal tag is the world's first paper tag that is microwave-safe.

RFID technology is used in the food industry to automate processes, provide real-time 'track and trace' functionalities, and support next-generation unmanned retail.

Real-Time Inventory Data

The technology offers retailers access to real-time inventory data, which helps in optimising operation and limiting food waste.

The new paper-based ECO Meal RFID tag by Stora Enso is specially designed for item-level tagging and tracking of ready-made meals.

Unlike traditional RFID tags, ECO Meal labels can remain on the food package while using a microwave oven and recycled in paper recycling systems.

ECO RFID tags are equipped with a natural anti-tamper feature and are recyclable in the paper recycling process.

The Range

ECO RFID Food & Beverage Collection by Stora Enso offers four RFID tags designed for the most common packaging variants in the category.

The tags can be used on items that are usually difficult to label, such as packages with metal foil layers, cans, bottle caps, and microwave meals.

The range is a perfect fit for both traditional supply chain management and unmanned retail outlets.

The company also offers its clients customised tags based on unique requirements.

Expiry Date Feature

Select tags in the range also have a unique expiry date feature, making it possible to encode expiry date information directly to tags used on fresh food packaging.

When used together with Selfly Store by Stora Enso, it is possible to follow each item's expiry date in real-time and get notifications for soon-to-expire products.

It helps retailers to take action in advance by offering price discounts or special promotions.
