Unilever Introduces Wrapper-Less, Multipack Ice Cream In The UK

Unilever has announced that it has launched its first wrapper-less, multipack ice cream for the Solero Organic Peach range in the UK.

The move is a part of a trial project, which is being conducted in collaboration with Ocado on a limited number of products.

Rethinking Plastic Packaging

Commenting on the project, vice-president of refreshment at Unilever, Noel Clarke, said, "As we head towards summer, we’ve listened to our customers and are working hard to rethink plastic packaging for our ice cream ranges."

"If successful and the feedback from customers is positive, this innovative pack could reduce the amount of plastic we use in the future to package our ice creams," Clarke added.

The project is a part of Unilever’s ‘#GetPlasticWise’ initiative, which aims to help the company in achieving its goal of making all its plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.

The new packaging will contain 35% less plastic compared to the original Solero Organic pack.

The has built-in compartments to house individual, wrapper-less ice lollies.

'Innovation And Creativity'

Strategic engagement manager at WRAP, Helen Bird, said, "We’re really impressed with the level of innovation and creativity that Unilever, a founding member of The UK Plastics Pact, has shown in developing this new pack."

"It will be welcomed by shoppers who [...] want to be able to recycle the packaging they bring home from supermarkets. We look forward to seeing the results of the trial."

The box is made of a specially designed PE (Polyethylene) coated cardboard which can be widely recycled.

The design ensures that customers can enjoy the product without compromising on the quality of the ice cream.
