Albert Heijn Investigates Dutch Christmas-Dinner Preferences

Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has shared the findings of a Panel Wizard survey, among 1,043 people (aged 25+) in The Netherlands, which had looked into what people like to serve, and eat, at Christmas time.

Although the survey found that the majority of Dutch home-chefs still preferred traditional Christmas dishes, almost all respondents (91%) also liked to keep preparation times to a minimum, and either opted for easy recipes (40%), to spend more time with their guests, or asked their guests to help them in the kitchen (55%).

The survey also found that 26% of men opted for a change from the traditional fare, over 10% of women, with a preference among men for more game and more 'adventurous cuisine' on the Christmas menu - often inspired by popular cookery shows on TV. However, only 20% said they would try a completely new recipe.

Some 42% favoured the traditional three-course meal, with the majority serving meat (70%) and vegetables (69%). Favourite meats included steak and 'roulade', closely followed by chicken, venison and turkey. Favourites among the traditional side dishes were shrimp cocktail, tiramisu and stewed pears.
