Albert Heijn Opens ‘Most Sustainable Supermarket In Europe’

Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has opened what it describes as the ‘most sustainable supermarket in Europe’ in Purmerend, in The Netherlands.

The store is 100% carbon neutral, according to a company press release, and is powered by 700 solar panels located on the roof. It is fully-equipped with LED lighting working on motion sensors, and also featured a number of car charging stations.

It even boasts a mini greenhouse, where herbs are grown naturally in-store.

In terms of novel concepts in the store itself, there is a juice and yoghurt bar, a sushi counter, as well as a fish display ‘on ice’.
