Aldi Announces Partnership With Plastic Bank

Discounter Aldi has announced a partnership with Plastic Bank to help the social start-up develop collection points for plastic waste in countries with poor waste management infrastructure.

As a part of the partnership, Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd will collaborate with Plastic Bank to build a new collection point in the Philippines, which will be operational in the spring of this year.

"With this partnership, we want to provide help where it is really necessary," said Erik Hollmann, head of corporate responsibility at Aldi Nord.

"We are pleased to be part of this project as Germany's first food retailer and to be able to support the local people."

Plastic Bank set up its first collection centre in the Philippines in 2016.

Plastic Waste Management

Plastic Bank offers money or social benefits in the form of medical care, food, or electricity to locals in exchange for plastic waste.

The plastic waste is then sorted, processed and fed to the recycling value chain.

So far, a total of 4,000 tonnes of plastic waste has been collected across the 26 collection points operated by Plastic Bank.

Plastic Bank also has collection points in Brazil, Indonesia, and Haiti.
