Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd Report Progress Made In Textile 'Detox'

German retailers Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have jointly published a report on the progress of a campaign to detoxify the chemical processes in textile- and shoe manufacturing.

The companies have supported the detox campaign, which was initiated by Greenpeace, since 2015.

The campaign’s main objective is to eliminate the use of eleven chemical compounds, often used in the production processes of textiles and shoes, such as chloro-benzene, by 2020.

The companies have so far managed to negotiate a PFC-free production of Aldi products in 78% of their suppliers’ facilities and aim to increase that figure to 100% in 2017.

"The Detox Progress Report allows us to outline our commitment to a more sustainable textile- and footwear production," explained Rayk Mende, corporate responsibility director at Aldi Nord.

Sven van den Boomen, managing director of corporate responsibility international at Aldi Süd, added, "Our long-term goal is that more sustainable production methods become a matter of course. The first results of our work have now been summarised in the Detox Progress Report."
