Aldi Milk Earns German Animal-Welfare Certificate

German discounters Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have announced that they will introduce milk certified by the German association for animal welfare, Deutscher Tierschutzbund (DTB).

In a first for German retail, the discounters will introduce the certified milks to all of its stores nationwide. The milks that will be certified are the Meierkamp ‘Frische Alpenmilch’ at Aldi Nord and Milfina ‘Landmilch’ at Aldi Süd.

The specifications required for the certificate include an individual feeding area and cubicle for each cow, loose-housing systems with an area of at least six square metres, annual hoof trimming and scratching brushes.

National Expansion

“From the very beginning, our goal was not to limit this policy to a regional and limited special offer, but to expand it to all markets, as this is the only way we can contribute to improving the holding of dairy cows all over Germany,” an Aldi spokesperson explained.

Around 80 farms operated by the dairy producer Gropper, which produces milk for Aldi’s own brands, have implemented the criteria of the DTB.

"With a basic staple such as milk, the nationwide sale is a milestone for more animal welfare in Germany, so we welcome Aldi’s move,” said Thomas Schröder, president of DTB.

Earlier this week, the discounters also launched a new private-label brand, Fair & Gut, which offers meat produced according to strict animal-welfare standards.
