Aldi Nord, Aldi Süd Campaign For Sustainable Tea Cultivation

German retailers Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have announced a joint campaign to promote the sustainable cultivation of tea, by stocking more teas certified by UTZ, Bio, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance.

The companies have committed themselves to stocking at least 30% certified herbal teas in their respective private-label ranges  by 2018, and increasing this percentage to 40% by 2020.

Aldi-branded green- and black teas should be 100% certified UTZ, Organic, Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance by the end of 2018.

"We welcome the fact that the Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd are the first retailers in Germany to extend their commitment to supplying sustainably produced herbal- and fruit teas, encouraging consumers to integrate more sustainable products into their daily lives," said Han de Groot, managing director of UTZ.

The new tea-buying strategy is intended to gradually cover all teas in the regular- and discount Aldi ranges, sourced from traditional tea-producing countries like China and India, as well as Europe.
