Walmart, Costco And Kroger Named Top Global Retailers

US companies Walmart, Costco and Kroger lead the list of the top 250 global retailers (food and specialised), according a study by Deloitte and specialised magazine Stores, published by the National Retail Federation.

According to the 2016 Global Powers of Retailing study, Walmart leads the list, with $485.6 billion in revenue, based on data from the financial year ending 2014 and a 2009-2014 compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.5 per cent.

Costco Wholesale Corporation is second, with $112.6 billion in retail revenue and CAGR of 9.5 per cent, while Kroger moved from sixth to third place with $108.4 billion in retail revenue and CAGR of 7.2 per cent.

Rounding off the top ten are Schwarz ($102.7 billion), Tesco ($99.7 billion), Carrefour ($98.5 billion), Aldi ($86.5 billion), Metro Group ($85.6 billion), Home Depot ($83.2 billion) and Walgreens ($76.4 billion).

Retail revenue for the top 250 global powers of retailing totalled almost $4.5 trillion in fiscal year 2014, an average size of nearly $18 billion per company. Four retailers generated retail revenue of more than $100 billion, while retail revenue for more than one quarter of the top 250 (65 companies) was less than $5 billion.

Retail revenue growth fell to a five-year low for European retailers in 2014, as 30 per cent of the region’s top 250 retailers (28 companies) experienced negative sales growth and another third saw their rate of growth decline.

The report analyses companies’ performance based on geographic region, primary product sector, e-commerce activity and other factors. The ranking took into account several economic indicators, particularly total revenues, the value of the retail business, and profits.
