Amazon has introduced a grocery delivery service in Los Angeles, following weeks of speculation. The web retail giant's new online grocery platform went live without any announcements to the media and follows roll-out of the service in the online retailer's hometown of Seattle six years ago.
Amazon Fresh offers more than 500,000 grocery products, with both food and non-food items on sale. Amazon Prime members receive a free 90-day trial of the Amazon Fresh service, after which the company will offer Amazon Prime Fresh membership for $299 annually, which includes access to the grocery delivery service along with Amazon Prime benefits. The online specialist offers delivery to selected US zip codes, with free delivery on orders of $35 or more.
Amazon has been delivering groceries in its hometown of Seattle since 2007 and it is expected that deliveries to San Francisco will follow later this year, with a possible roll-out to as many as 40 major urban areas by 2014. (10 June)
