Avocado Prices On The Rise

Weather conditions and a strong demand have resulted in a shortage of avocados in the European market, according to reports.

The coming Easter has accelerated demand for the products in some countries, while rain in South America (particularly Peru) has resulted in late flowering, and thus delays.

South African shipments, which are beginning to take place, are on schedule, and as far as EU distributors are concerned, can't come quickly enough.

As a result, Spain is selling avocados at increased prices – about €14 per case, in general.

"We barely have any avocados, and there is some panic amongst large European distributors, as we are finding it impossible to fill their orders," Óscar Martínez, of the export department of Reyes Gutiérrez, was reported to have said by FreshPlaza.com.
