Bio-Planet Kortrijk Relocates To New, Eco-Friendly Building

A Bio-Planet outlet in Kortrijk, Belgium, has relocated to a new, environmentally-friendly building, equipped with the capacity to slice and pack meat, cheese, and vegetables on-site.

The service is a first of its kind for the organic retailer, part of Colruyt Group.

Convenient Shopping

Business unit manager of Bio-Planet, Jo Ghilain, said, “Our customers can choose the quantity they need and can immediately see the price on the packaging.

"This allows them to do their shopping faster, more efficiently and more independently.”

Ghilain further explained that the products will also carry a nutrition label keeping in mind customer demand for extensive product information.

Eco-Friendly Premises

The store has installed an eco-friendly propane cooling system for fresh produce and self-service display areas.

The ventilation system is equipped to recover 75% of the heat from the air in the store, and skylights on the roof maximise the use of daylight. LED lighting in the store further cuts down energy consumption by 30%.

With an 888 square-metre green roof area, the building also has provisions for rainwater harvesting.

Launched in 2001, Bio-Planet Kortrijk was Colruyt Group's first organic supermarket. It now has around 28 stores.

In the spring of 2019, the first Colruyt Group Academy of West Flanders will open in the same building, which will host various workshops for individuals and groups.
