Pingo Doce Opens First Convenience Store at BP Petrol Stations

Portuguese supermarket chain Pingo Doce has opened its first convenience store at a BP petrol station in Portugal, located on the Estrada da Luz.

A source from retail group Jerónimo Martins, which owns Pingo Doce, told daily "Diario Economico" that the Pingo Doce&Go store will serve as a pilot to test the concept, adding that it "will help consolidate the partnership between the two brands, as well as continue to deliver innovative solutions".

Two years ago, in an attempt to fight off competition from rival supermarket chain Continente (owned by Sonae), which partnered with Galp, Pingo Doce teamed up with BP and launched the "Poupa Mais" (Save More) discount card.

The card is distributed in Pingo Doce stores to customers who purchase products with a value equal or higher than €40. Subsequently, customers accumulate €2 for BP fuel on every €40 in purchases made in supermarkets of the JM network.

BP currently operates 345 petrol stations in Portugal and accounts for a 17% market share, making it the second largest oil company in the domestic market.
