Bulgaria’s T-Market Targets 28% Annual Growth

Bulgarian supermarket chain T-Market is expecting sales to grow by 26-28% this year, according to CEO Edvinas Volkas.

In an interview with Progressive magazine, Volkas said that T-Market is one of the top three supermarket chains in the country in terms of stores, and has 70,000 customers per day.

He added that Bulgarian consumers shop more often - an average of about 2.7 times a week – compared to other European countries. Bulgarians also consume more fresh products (fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy) compared to Baltic countries, for example.

T-Market offers over 7,000 items in its stores, with around 70% of suppliers coming from Bulgaria.

In regards to the grocery retail market in Bulgaria as a whole, Volkas said it has seen a growth of 3-4% since the start of 2017, and that this trend will continue as there is great potential for development.

He added that there is still room for other international retailers on the Bulgarian market, “because some players have left and a niche is waiting to be occupied”.

Present in Bulgaria since 2005, T-Market is owned by Maxima Bulgaria, part of the Maxima Group Holding, which operates grocery retail chains in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria and Poland.

Last year, the company opened 14 new stores in Bulgaria, taking its total operation to 63 supermarkets in 30 cities.
