Traces Of Bute Found In Asda Corned Beef

British retailer Asda has recalled a corned beef product from its budget own brand range following the discovery of traces of horse painkiller 'bute'.

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that "very low levels" of veterinary drug phenylbutazone were found in batches of Asda Smart Price corned beef.

The retailer withdrew the product on 8 March when after it was found to contain more than 1 per cent horse DNA and further tests showed the presence of bute in the meat, at the level of four parts per billion (4ppb).

As a precaution, Asda has also recalled its Chosen By You corned beef product as it is produced in the same factory. Customers who have bought either product have been urged not to eat it but to return it to the supermarket. The FSA said no other Asda products are thought to be affected.

Horse carcasses in the UK need to have a negative bute test before they can enter the food chain but the risk to anyone who had eaten such meat is "very low". (10 April)
