Carlsberg's Brewery Horses Move To Copenhagen Zoo

Copenhagen Zoo has entered into an agreement with Carlsberg to house four brewery horses during the rebuilding of the Old Carlsberg Brewery site in Copenhagen.

The Carlsberg Visitor Centre will undergo a major renovation and modernisation programme to offer a more contemporary attraction.

Jakob Stilov, senior director of real estate and head of Visit Carlsberg, said, "The brewery horses and historic stables are an important part of Carlsberg's history. The horses were used for the distribution of beer up to the 1950s, but today we only use them for special occasions.

"I think it's safe to say that they're very spoilt, which is why we don't think they should remain here while we renovate. So far, the horses have been untouched by the modernisation, but the stables will be undergoing a major renovation in the next few months."

New Horse Paddock

Copenhagen Zoo has built a new horse paddock close to the gate at Roskildevej for the four brewery horses.

A coachman from Carlsberg will accompany the horses to the zoo and be responsible for keeping, training and using the horses.

Bengt Holst, scientific director at Copenhagen Zoo, said, "These are fantastically beautiful animals with a long and exciting history. So I look forward to us and our guests being able to experience the horses up close."

The horses will return to the brewery in the spring of 2022 when the site reopens after renovations.
