Carrefour Expands Blockchain Technology To 'Quality Line' Tomatoes

French retailer Carrefour has announced it will be expanding the use of blockchain technology to its Quality Line cored oblong tomatoes.

Blockchain refers to a secure digital database in which information from suppliers, producers, and distributors is stored, increasing transparency and traceability in the supply chain.

After introducing the technology as a way to enhance food traceability in early 2018, starting with its FCQ Auvergne Chicken product line, Carrefour has decided to progress with the concept.

According to the retailer, it will 'help Carrefour become the leader of the food transition for everyone.'

Simply Scan

As with the first product line, product packaging will feature a QR Code which consumers can scan using their smartphones.

Through this system, shoppers can find out what farming methods were used for a particular product, where it was grown, or the name of the producer.

Carrefour said producers can 'use the technology to showcase their local expertise and their commitment to a better form of agriculture.'

For example, a quick scan will show that the Quality Line tomatoes are naturally grown, hand-picked, and herbicide-free.

Not Just For Show

This expansion to other product lines shows Carrefour is making an effort to use blockchain technology in meaningful ways. When Carrefour introduced the technology in early 2018, an analysis by ESM questioned if it was meant to be a promotional showcase of a trendy bit of technology.

However, this announcement helps forward the 'Carrefour 2022' plan announced in January by Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard, which included a focus on improving traceability and quality standards.

According to French consumer association Que Choisir, Carrefour is set to introduce the new technology in seven more product lines, such as free range eggs or AOP Rocamadour cheese, before the end of the year.
