Carrefour Italia To Introduce Blockchain Mapped Product

Carrefour Italia has announced that it will launch its first product mapped with blockchain technology on 29 September, across all its points of sale.

Chicken from its private label brand, Filiera Qualità Carrefour will be the first product on which the technology will be implemented.

Consumers will be able to digitally verify information about the entire supply chain of the product, from the origin to its arrival at the point of sale, simply by scanning a QR code.

With the launch, Carrefour Italia will become the first large retail organisation in the country to implement the technology in tracing the source of its products.

Focus On Supply Chains

Carrefour Italia has also signed agreements with local supply chains in some Italian regions to enhance local products. This has resulted in the launch of projects like Piemontese (Piemontese milk), Latte Genova, Piemondina (Piedmontese rice), Toscafour (typical Tuscan products) and LaTTellina (Valtellina milk mozzarella).

The move is part of Carrefour Italia’s 'Food Transition' strategy, which is based on raising awareness about sustainable and responsible consumption, promoting organic products and enhancing the value chain through greater security and transparency.

The retailer is also expanding its range of organic products, with the aim of promoting correct food habits that are also environmentally friendly and affordable.

Carrefour Italia's goal is to make organic products a principal component of its business, and it expects the category to push the company's total turnover by up to 30% by 2022.

The company has also set up an advisory board, an external and independent body, with experts from the area to identify new strategic opportunities.
