Carrefour Rolls Out Mobile Payment Solution 'Carrefour Pay'

French retail group Carrefour is stepping up its digital transformation with the in-store roll-out of Carrefour Pay, the retailer's mobile payment app.

Carrefour Pay, which is already available on Android, provides users with a cash-free way to pay at Carrefour stores, in addition to accessing loyalty programmes and discount coupons.

The app can now be used in 3,000 Carrefour stores in France, as well as the retailer's stores in other countries that accept contactless payments.

How It Works

Similar to Apple Pay, which was launched in France in June 2016, Carrefour Pay is designed to be quick and easy to use, with the aim of cutting down on checkout waiting times and appealing to digitally minded customers.

Shoppers connect their bank card details to the app, then present their phone at the checkout's payment terminal whenever they want to purchase goods in store, and the payment is automatically taken from their account.

The service is currently available for customers with PASS, Mastercard or C-Zam cards, but Carrefour says that all bank cards will be added to the system later in the year.

Digital Investment

Carrefour says that the new Carrefour Pay system is designed to "meet the needs of today's increasingly connected consumers" and is a major step in the roll-out of the company's new digital strategy.

As part the group's five-year transformation plan, which was launched by CEO Alexandre Bompard in January, Carrefour announced plans to invest €2.8 billion in developing its digital and omnichannel operations.

Carrefour revealed its aim to become a leading omnichannel retailer and increase its food e-commerce turnover to €5 billion by 2022.
