Carrefour Romania Ended 2016 With 298 Stores

French retailer Carrefour finished 2016 with 298 stores operational in Romania, local publication Business-Review.eu has reported.

During its presentation on its 2016 performance, Carrefour Romania said it opened 103 new supermarkets and three new hypermarkets over the year. At the close of 2015, the French company had 192 Romanian outlets.

Key to its burgeoning presence in Romania has been its take-over of Billa, which saw the acquisition of 86 Billa supermarkets (after local competition authorities gave the green light for the deal).

These supermarkets now trade under the Carrefour Market banner, and occupy floor space of more than 83,000 square metres.

The group posted €35.88 billion in net sales in France for the year, down marginally from the €36.27 billion in recorded last year.

In Europe as a whole, sales were up 0.1% to €55.96 billion, while overall, Carrefour’s total sales were €79.64 billion, which is 2.7% higher than last year at constant exchange rates.
