Carrefour Signs Pact To Phase Out Plastic Packaging By 2025

Retail giant Carrefour has signed an agreement with the ministry of ecological transition in France, formalising its pledge to phase out plastic packaging by 2025.

The pact will enable the retailer to step-up efforts in designing and implementing eco-friendly packaging alternatives.

Auchan Retail France, Biscuits Bouvard, Coca-Cola European Partners, Danone, LSDH, Nestlé France, L´Oréal, Système-U, Unilever, the Tara Foundation and WWF France have already signed up to the same agreement.

Shared Targets

Carrefour has also called upon other leading retailers as well as NGOs and consumers to commit to a number of shared targets to combat plastic pollution.

In France, packaging accounts for 45% of the total amount of plastic use, and only 25% of this packaging is effectively recycled, the company said.

Initiatives For 2019

Carrefour will replace polystyrene trays in the cheese section with cardboard trays, which according to the retailer will cut the use of 111 tonnes of plastic.

In addition, its organic fair-trade bananas will no longer be packed in plastic sachets, saving at least 23 tonnes of plastic every year.

The retailer also aims to completely phase out plastic films on cucumbers by March of next year.
