Following a wave of supermarket chains removing the environmentally-controversial pangasius fish from shelves, Carrefour Spain will discontinue sales of the fish, ElPeriodico.com has reported.
The motivation behind the decision is the high environmental impact of the fish, as it contributes to water pollution by producing copious amounts of excreta and food waste. The fish itself is perfectly safe to eat.
Other Carrefour branches have taken action to remove the fish from stores, including Carrefour Belgium and France.
While Carrefour France removed the fish from its in-store fish counters, Carrefour Belgium has also taken frozen pangasius SKUs from its hypermarkets’ freezers. Carrefour Spain follows the Belgian example of an outright ban on the fish, both fresh and frozen.
Carrefour Italy may soon follow suit, some reports speculate, following the example of Esselunga.
Coop Italy has also stopped selling private label pangasius.
