Carrefour Spain Launches New Insect-Based Food Range

Carrefour has announced that it launched the sale of a new insect-based food range in Spain.

The aim of this new range is to offer consumers the most innovative food products and incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives into the product mix, the company said.

The new range will feature ten new products, including energy bars, snacks, pasta and granola. All products are made entirely in Europe manually and organically.

The products are also packaged in recycled paper with detailed information on the ingredients on their nutritional values.

Carrefour said that the consumption of insects is a growing trend, which is even recognised by European legislation, which as of 1 January this year classified insects as a 'new food'.

The United Nation Food and Agriculture Organisation said that insects already form part of over 2 billion people’s diets worldwide. They are rich in proteins, vitamins B1, B2 and B3, contain omega 3 and 6 as well as all essential amino acids, and are an important source of minerals such as iron.

Their production involves the emission of 99% less greenhouse gas and minimises contamination and the consumption of water.

Carrefour recently published its quarter one results for 2018 where it posted a like-for-like sales increase of 0.4%, to €20.8 billion.
