Spanish Drinking More Sparkling Wine, Study Finds

During the first two months of 2016, total wine consumption in Spain decreased slightly in value (0.7 per cent), to€152.9 million, and volume (1 per cent), dropping to 64.3 million litres.

As reported by financialfood.es, this was mainly due to a decrease in consumption of non-DO wines.

At the same time, consumption of Spanish sparkling wine (mainly, but not exclusively Cava) grew 9.2 per cent in volume (2.8 million litres) and 22.4 per cent in value (€16.7 million).

During January and February 2016, the market saw a consumption level of 22.3 million litres of still DO wines. This represents a decrease of 1.5 per cent in volume but a growth of 2.3 per cent in value compared to the same period last year.
