British retailer the Co-operative Group is set to introduce new corrugated-cardboard pizza discs to its stores, in a bid to cut the amount of waste that it sends to landfill.
These new corrugated discs will replace the current polystyrene discs used with the convenience-store operator’s 17 own-brand pizzas.
This strategy aims to prevent approximately 200 tonnes of polystyrene boards going to landfill, converting it into almost 450 tonnes of recycled cardboard per annum.
These new boards are manufactured by Stateside Foods, and they have a lower carbon impact than most of their competitors, weighing only 20g.

Iain Ferguson, environment manager at the Co-op, said, “This change is a major step in our journey to make all of our packaging easy to recycle, and we will be making further announcements on packaging in the months ahead."
The retailer has also indicated that it will also move from black-plastic to cardboard packaging for tomatoes later this year.
The Co-op previously reformed the packaging of its protein products to make them easily recyclable. This includes products such as chicken-breast and bacon trays.
